Graham Turner cranks up heat for big clash
Friday 15th April 2011, 11:35AM BST.
Shrewsbury boss Graham Turner has turned up the heat ahead of tomorrow’s League Two clash with Stockport County, declaring: “If we are serious about automatic promotion then it is a game we have to win.”
Town head into the match at the Greenhous Meadow on the back of a disappointing 3-0 reverse at Aldershot last time out but Turner is confident of a much-improved showing against a Stockport side on the brink of relegation.
“After last week I don’t think there will be any complacency,” said the Town chief. “Players know how important these games are and know that we want to be successful so sometimes you just need to take the pressure off them a little bit.
“We are running out of games a bit and we know that tomorrow is the chance to get three points.
“We are capable of finishing the season well and finishing the season strongly.”
County are five points adrift of safety with five games to go and haven’t won away since late December.
And Turner admits he will take a result over the performance as Town enter their final five games.
He said: “They will be fighting for their lives and we know they will make it very hard for us.
“You can imagine them coming here with a defensive set-up and making life very difficult for us and so it might be a scrappy game.
“We’ve got to be strong enough and good enough to break them down if that is the case.
“They have produced battling performances and results recently so we can’t under-estimate them in any way and we have to perform like we can do,” he added.
“They are very dangerous opponents. They had a good draw against a Stevenage side going well and Stevenage equalised in the last minute.
“It is treating them with the respect we would any other side and making sure we work harder than we did at Aldershot.”
Turner has a fully-fit squad to choose from for the Greenhous Meadow game.
