David Raven’s Shrewsbury Town hopes
Tuesday 5th April 2011, 11:20AM BST.
Shrewsbury Town full-back David Raven is eyeing the dream double – of promotion and a new contract.
Raven is thriving on playing a central role in Town’s bid to secure a top three finish in League Two after returning from a hip injury in the last month.
And he would also love to extend his stay at the Greenhous Meadow after signing a one-year deal last summer when released by Carlisle.
“It can’t get much better than it is at the moment on the back of three wins and the team playing well,” said the 25-year-old Scouser.
“I feel as though I’m getting stronger and fitter all the time and all the lads are enjoying their football.
“To get promotion and a new deal would be lovely because I would love to stay here and be successful.
“But getting a new contract isn’t really at the forefront of my mind at the moment – I’m just concentrating on the last six games.”
Meanwhile, supersub Lionel Ainsworth – fresh from scoring twice in Saturday’s 4-1 victory over Macclesfield – has urged Town not to let up on their current form.
“We scored some good goals on Saturday and played some good football and to be able to do that at this stage of the season is pleasing,” said the winger.
“But we know there is a lot of hard work to do and we have to keep it going over the last six games.
“They boys were saying yesterday the table in League Two hasn’t been as close as this for a long time.
“If we keep winning games, the rest will take care of itself.”
Ainsworth will be seeking a favour from his old club Hereford tonight when they entertain Wycombe.
The trip to Edgar Street is the game in hand for the Chairboys who are one point ahead of Shrewsbury in second. On-a-roll Accrington are the other promotion hopefuls in action tonight – they entertain Southend.
