Mat Sadler’s Shrewsbury Town promotion hopes
Monday 4th April 2011, 4:24PM BST.
Dependable left back Mat Sadler believes winning promotion with Shrewsbury Town would eclipse playing in the Premier League as the highlight of his career.
The 26-year-old, an ever present this term, played his part in Saturday’s 4-1 home triumph over Macclesfield which kept Town firmly in contention for automatic promotion.
Sadler, who made 15 top flight appearances at Birmingham between 2002 and 2006, has spent the season on loan with Shrewsbury from his parent club Watford.
And he is desperate for the campaign end in the jubilation of promotion.
“If we get promoted, I will be the happiest I have been in my football career,” said Sadler.
“It would mean that much to me because I felt a bit of a forgotten man before I came here and felt my career was only going in one direction.
“This would be the biggest thing of my career so I’m going to give it absolutely everything I can.”
Saturday’s victory ensures Town remain in the automatic promotion berths, although their two main rivals for second and third positions — Bury and Wycombe – each have a game in hand.
But Sadler believes Town are entering the most important phase of the season in the highest possible spirits.
“It was good to get a convincing three points on Saturday and it continues the form we are in at the moment,” he added.
“Everyone seems confident, we are enjoying our football and we feel really good going into the last six games.
“There is still a slog to go and there will be some twists and turns along the way but hopefully what the fans saw on Saturday will get their juices flowing for the rest of the season.
“It’s a six game season now and we are in a good position.”
