Graham Turner tells Shrewsbury Town to keep motoring
Wednesday 30th March 2011, 3:20PM BST.
On-song Shrewsbury Town have been urged to “keep their foot on the gas” after storming back into League Two’s top three.
Town’s second away victory in four days came courtesy of a 3-1 triumph at Rotherham which saw them leapfrog Bury and Stevenage into the automatic promotion places.
It also saw Shrewsbury match last season’s final tally of 63 points with seven games still remaining.
Boss Graham Turner was delighted with his side’s efforts but has called for more of the same as the run-in intensifies.
“To win 3-1 at a fellow promotion candidate was a good night for us and we played some very good football on a difficult pitch,” said Turner.
“But we are not getting carried away. People talk about it being the business end of the season and it’s nice to be in that position with seven games left.
“What we haven’t got to do is take our foot off the gas.
“The hard work we have put in over the last two matches will see us through if we continue in that vein.
“The players have set down a marker with the way we have worked and the manner in which we have played. We can’t let that standard drop.”
Town’s victory came despite Matt Harrold, Jon Taylor and Ian Sharps struggling with a sickness bug before the game.
Indeed, Harrold was a late withdrawal with Tom Bradshaw stepping up off the bench as his replacement on a night when fellow striker James Collins scored twice.
“We had a few problems just before the game with one or two players feeling a bit sick,” revealed Tuerner.
“Matt was sick in the dressing room before going out for the warm-up but wanted to give it a chance.
“He went out to start the warm-up but soon indicated he felt rough.”
Town reserves are in action tonight when they entertain Bury at the Greenhous Meadow (7pm).
The team is: Chris Neal, Kelvin Lomax, Connor Goldson, Jermaine Grandison, Danny Taylor, Harry Hooman, Craig Disley, Kevin McIntyre, Benjamin van den Broek, Nathan Elder, Lionel Ainsworth.
