Shrewsbury Town defender Shane Cansdell-Sherriff has won a call-up to the Australia squad for a training camp in Germany.

The centre-back has been named by coach coach Holger Osieck in a 22-man squad of European-based players that will gather from Tuesday to Friday next week.

Cansdell-Sherriff, 29, will fly out on Monday and could play for the Socceroos in friendlies against the reserves of Bundesliga clubs Borussia Mönchengladbach and Schalke 04.

He will return in time for Shrewsbury’s trip to Bradford on Saturday, March 26.

“They are looking to get a few new players involved in the squad and new faces so fingers crossed it can go well,” said Cansdell-Sherriff.

“It is a great honour to be involved with your country and something that you always want to achieve in your career

“It will be great to see some of my old mates that I used to play with back in Australia as well.”

Meanwhile, boss Graham Turner today urged Shrewsbury to “keep their nerve” as they attempt to re-impose themselves on the League Two automatic promotion race

Town stayed in fifth position in the table and four points behind this weekend’s third placed visitors after last night’s latest batch of League Two matches — Torquay springing the surprise of the night with a win at high-flying Bury.

Saturday’s shock 5-0 reverse away to the in-form Gulls provided an unwelcome jolt to Town’s promotion chances.

But Turner has urged players and supporters to maintain a calm head during the final 10-game run-in.

“We have to learn from last Saturday and show the strength of character to bounce back,” he said.

“There is still a lot of football to be played and there will be surprising results between now and the end of the season.

“It’s a testing time for everyone and that includes supporters. We just have to keep our nerve and realise what there is to gain with good performances and good results between now and the end of the season.”
