Blog: Jake Robinson’s great (shame he wasn’t playing for Shrewsbury)
Monday 14th March 2011, 8:30AM GMT.
Town’s strange decision to let Jake Robinson play against his parent club proved to be a stroke of genius…for Torquay, writes Shrewsbury Town blogger James Pugh.
I felt letting Robinson go in January was a poor decision by Turner, especially to a promotion rival.
Since then he has gone on to score goals, including a brace against Town in the 5-0 thumping on Saturday.
In the first half of the season Robinson proved he can score goals at this level and even if he was let go because of a poor attitude, why not let him go to a mid-table team or one battling relegation.
But on top of all this, what benefits were Town going to gain from letting him play against us on Saturday?
Of course he was going to be fired up and inspired to prove a point to Turner – and he certainly did that.
It rounded off a disappointing week for Town, who let slip a lead to local rivals and fellow promotion-chasers Port Vale on Tuesday.
Unless Town start beating their promotion rivals how can we expect to get promoted.
We can’t rely on beating the average sides in the league and go into big games thinking ‘a point will do’.
Town also need to cut out the silly mistakes – the penalties, the own goals, the sendings off.
I understand the pressure of promotion is hotting up, but if we continue to gift teams goals we can kiss goodbye to League One football next season.
Following four wins in a row, one win in five is some contrast and is not good enough.
We have got the team to get promoted, now we need to start getting the results on the pitch.
After Saturday’s humiliation Town need to pick themselves up quickly and get back to winning ways before we lose further ground to our promotion rivals.
It won’t be easy though as this weekend we welcome high-flyers Wycombe who have already won an impressive eight league games on the road.
In the reverse fixture in September we drew 2-2 and following defeat to Torquay, it’s looking like a must-win game.

Torquay were actually in 12th place when Robinson signed for them, hardly ‘Promotion rivals’, mind you since then they are currently top of the form table.

How on earth can folks justify these ongoing remarks about Robinson’s departure from the Club being a mistake. He was simply not good enough and had endless chances to prove himself but repeatedly blew it. Whatever, the reason he didn’t fancy playing for Shrewsbury Town FC and clearly had an attitude problem that prompted Turner to move him out.
I don’t want to see him back.
I think you’ll find that it was an adminstrative error that enabled him to play, which Turner is probably seething about.

I dont disagree with Robinson going out on loan as he was not doing the business but allowing him to play was silly.
Even if Robinson didnt play against us I cant see the outcome being any different as we were useless throughout.
Its the fans I feel sorry for as they were terrific in numbers and in return no passion and pride..
Refund please..

I hope it was an administrative error and not “I’m not bothered whether he plays or not”. Also hope whoever’s error it was has been disciplined.
Thr thought of Jake scoring against us in the play-offs is too horrible to contemplate!

When all the Woes of this game die down, when the decision to let a striker go who had lost form while with us there still remains big questions over the entire teams performance.
I’ve been to a number of away games this season and seen a gritty determination from the Shrews that has won us many admirers, I didn’t travel to this one, but had expected us to show that same determination even if the chips were down.
Promotion is about the whole of a seasons performance being good enough, we just don’t know yet whether the teams above us will drop their own standards often enough to let us back in the top three, all good teams have bad days, we’ve had two bad ones over the last month. Let’s not panic and get the jitters just yet, it was always going to be a season where we played right up to the line and that’s exactly what is likely to happen. Certainly Turner may have made a mistake by letting Robinson go for the rest of the season, he has however made shrewd buys to make us a stronger team elsewhere. Saturday just didn’t reflect any real effort by those better buys. Keep faith, we’ll get there.
