Shrewsbury Town 1 Stevenage 0

Jon Ashton of Stevenage and James Collins of Shrewsbury Town

Shrewsbury Town made it four wins on the bounce with a hard-fought victory over Stevenage courtsey of a Nicky Wroe goal.

The midfielder’s match-winning strike seven minutes before the break was the one real moment of quality in a game which was a far cry from Town’s five-star showing at Lincoln on Tuesday night.

Wroe’s goal came after Lionel Ainsworth had seen a shot blocked and the rebound fell to the former Torquay man who calmly took a touch and steered a right foot volley past Chris Day in the visitors’ goal.

Shane Cansdell-Sherriff almost doubled Town’s lead when his looping header came back off the bar while Chris Beardsley came closest for the visitors when his right footed effort was palmed away by Ben Smith in the home goal.

The visitors threw everything at the home goal in the final minutes but the Town defence held firm.
