Blog: Shrewsbury Town are back on track. Can it last?

Blog: Two consecutive victories put Town’s promotion bid back on track, writes Shrewsbury Town blogger James Pugh.
Five goals scored, two clean sheets, lots of new faces – all in all a fantastic week to be a Town fan.
Ahead of transfer deadline day Town were a team struggling for form and in desperate need of new faces to freshen up the squad.
Signings were anticipated, but nobody could have predicted what followed. Full credit to the manager for recognising the need to strengthen and in the right positions as well.
We have got rid of the dead wood and replaced it with some fresh young faces who will hopefully help in our push for promotion until the end of the season.
I must say I wasn’t sad to see Holden leave. At best he is a useful squad player, but I would much rather have the exciting Grandison playing at right back.
My only criticism of the manger is the decision to let Jake Robinson leave on loan.
He may have not produced the form of the early part of the season, but he is someone who can still impact a game.
More importantly it has left us with two kids (Collins and Bradshaw), Harrold and the returning Elder (who I don’t think is good enough) up front.
This is asking a lot of Collins and Bradshaw, but it also shows the manager has got a lot of faith in them to deliver on a regular basis.
The results against Burton and Southend were desperately needed and maybe the outcome of deadline day gave the existing players in the squad a kick up the backside, knowing that there places in the starting line-up were in jeopardy if they didn’t perform.
The manger’s decisions to re-call Harrold and start Jon Taylor have also paid off.
Confidence should be back amongst the players following the last week and we need to keep the momentum going in this week’s double header.
First up is a trip to Lincoln on Tuesday who are probably safe from relegation, but too far away from challenging for promotion.
Stats favour Town in this game as Lincoln have lost six games and only scored 10 goals at home in the league this season.
On Saturday we welcome Stevenage who are in a similar place to Stevenage in terms of what they are playing for this season.
Town will be looking to build on the 1-1 draw we picked up in the reverse fixture.
A question for Town fans. Which of Town’s new faces will have the greatest impact on the remainder of the season?

Too harsh on Nathan Elder – give the guy a chance after a long recovery.

All kinds of good things are starting to click now, it’s not so much about which of the new faces will have the greatest impact but how each will build confidence throughout the team on the pitch at the time.
Having said that Grandison for me is a player who looks like long term quality and way above the 2nd division, he’s added a calm to the back four, builds quickly to our midfield giving us more depth, wins loads of high balls and has wicked pace to turn defense into attack.
Lets hope this run of wins fuels more to come and opens the gap between us and the teams below us in what is still a very competitive division and one that has to be fought hard for to get out of.
Come on Town, lets make it a big away win at Lincoln and open the scoring floodgates…7 nil away would be nice!

Definitely too harsh on Elder. He will start to compete for a place soon and needs all of the support he can get to help his confidence. Can be a good player with supply.
Robinson would thrive on the change to midfield, so yes it is a shame that he is out on loan and we probably won’t see him play in a Shrews top soon.

your comments on jon taylor are substantially understated. the lad has been brilliant, 3 goals in 2 games, matty harrold 2 well taken goals. paul simpson has accused uncle graham of buying in the kitchen sink to go for promo. not seen much of the kitchen sink yet, with home grown talent like taylor and bradshaw, imports collins and harrold, the kitchen sink units may remain in their mfi boxes for a bit,
floreat salopia at lincoln and home to stevenage. we need another 6 points so keep it up town.
rowland you can help uncle graham and the squad, lay off the port and change that ruddy badge and bring back those 3 loggerheads and a floreat salopia badge to accompany town to L1

First you talk of ‘removing dead wood’, then in the other breath critise the managers trust in youth. That is why your a reporter(debatable)and not a football manager. one game of 5-a-side a week with the lads down the pub, does not constitute a good knowledge of the game.

Elder could well be a useful player in a few months who knows?
Great last 2 games and I think Grandison and Taylor have made a massive impact with Harrold showing what he can do. Wave to the Wobblers !
Wroe could be good and I think Turner had to gamble last week or see another season drift away. We need to establish some consistancy next and if we can the confidence will start flowing.
Hi AJ
Dizzy signing off.
