Graham Turner’s fears as two more managers sacked
Saturday 5th February 2011, 11:30AM GMT.
Shrewsbury Town boss Graham Turner believes the sack race is denying young managers the chance to make their mark.
Turner is approaching 1,600 games as a manager, having sat in the hotseat at Shrewsbury twice as well as at Aston Villa, Wolves and Hereford.
But it seems unlikely too many will follow in his footsteps, with two more biting the dust this week – Alan Irvine at Sheffield Wednesday and Andy Scott at Brentford.
“I think there has got to be a long-term structure to the club as well as looking for a quick fix to get promotion,” said Turner.
“It concerns me to see two more sackings on Thursday. More and more managers are not getting any time at all to implement any sort of strategy – it’s instant success or you’re out.
In the case of Andy Scott at Brentford, he took the club up into League One and they’re not having a disastrous season by any means.
“He was a bright, young manager who had some structure to what he was doing at Brentford and it’s a crying shame to see him get the boot.”
Turner insists that managers giving youth a chance should be applauded and given time to make that strategy work.
The Town boss made six signings on transfer deadline day but four of those – goalkeeper Lee Nicholls, defenders Jermaine Grandison and Paul Downing and midfielder David Davis – were under 21.
“The long-term, sustained success of a club depend on the right foundations being laid down,” added Turner.
“The right foundations, in my view, are bringing in players of the right age.
“You can’t get away with a totally young side and the right sort of experienced player helps, but certainly I’d want the nucleus of the side to be with a long-term future in mind.”
