Taylor dedicates Shrews’ goals to his grandfather

Shrewsbury’s man-of-the-moment Jon Taylor has revealed the personal heartache which accompanied his dream full Football League debut.
Taylor’s grandfather passed away only last week, but the 18-year-old winger – a graduate of the Town youth system – was delighted to provide a fitting tribute as he scored twice in last night’s 3-0 home victory over Burton.
“My grandad passed away a few days ago and I was really close to him, so hopefully he was watching that,” said Taylor, who scored the first two goals.
“I had a top saying ‘rest in pace grandad’ which I was going to wear underneath and I didn’t in the end which I’m a bit gutted about.
“But I’m made up for my mum and dad to have something good happen. It’s been a tough week for everyone but they were there last night.”
Taylor’s goals helped propel Shrewsbury to a crucial victory which saw manager Graham Turner’s side climb two places to sixth in League Two. And the diminutive Scouser admitted he was nervous at being handed his chance of a first League start.
“It could have gone a bit better because I wasn’t happy with my performance in the first half,” Taylor said.
“I was getting dead nervous and lost the ball a couple of times. Second half, I just went for it. Getting the first goal relaxed me and I thought I played better.
“But the most important thing was that the team got the three points.”
Boss Turner was thrilled with Taylor’s brace. “He doesn’t half work for the side and he’s a brave little lad. He took his first goal very well.”
