Shrewsbury Town line up after busiest day of transfers

Shrewsbury Town will tonight attempt to end their mid-season wobble after the busiest day of transfers in the club’s history.

No less than six deals were completed to bring players to the Greenhous Meadow while three headed through the exit door – a loan move for striker Jake Robinson and two permanent departures.

And that has provided a hectic build-up to tonight’s crucial League Two clash against Burton Albion at the Greenhous Meadow.

Midfielder Nicky Wroe has signed from Town’s League Two rivals Torquay and full back Kelvin Lomax has agreed a deal until the end of the campaign after the 24-year-old left Oldham yesterday.

Manager Graham Turner also introduced three loan players from Premier League clubs.

Midfielder David Davis and defender Paul Downing have arrived from Wolves and West Bromwich respectively, while goalkeeper Lee Nicholls has joined from Wigan.

Elsewhere, right back Jermaine Grandison has seen his loan move from Coventry converted into a permanent move.

Robinson has gone in the opposite direction to Wroe, joining Torquay for the remainder of the season on loan while right back Dean Holden has reached an agreement to settle the remainder of his contract.

It provided a frantic day for Turner whose side are looking to re-ignite their promotion push when they host Burton tonight on the back of a run of just two victories in 12 games.

“It’s a massive game to get back on track,” said the Town boss.

“We have had two very disappointing performances at Oxford and Bury and we have to get back to winning ways.

“There is a determination about the players to put things right.

“I don’t think we will be far off at the end of the season. It’s one of the testing times where you need all the players to show their character.”

Davis and Nicholls are both available tonight.

INS

David Davis: The 19-year-old midfielder from Wolves has signed on a one-month loan with a view to extending the temporary deal.

Lee Nicholls: The England under 19 goalkeeper has joined on loan for a month from Wigan. Will still be eligible to play for the reserve team of the Premier League club during his time at Shrewsbury.

Paul Downing: The 6ft 1in 19-year-old defender had a spell on loan with the former club of Town boss Graham Turner and assistant John Trewick Hereford last season. Has signed for an initial month from West Brom.

Nicky Wroe: The 25-year-old midfielder has joined from League Two rivals Torquay for an undisclosed fee on an 18-month contract. Scored 23 times in 124 starts at Plainmoor and, after starting off at Barnsley, had brief spells at York, Bury and Hamilton in Scotland.

Jermaine Grandison: His loan move from Coventry has been converted into a permanent deal on a two-and-a-half year deal. Made an encouraging debut against Chesterfield before limping out with a slight hamstring strain against Oxford last Tuesday.

Kelvin Lomax: The 24-year-old right back has been at Oldham for 15 years but reached an agreement to leave Boundary Park yesterday. Was on loan at Chesterfield just before Christmas and has signed on a six-month contract.

OUTS

Jake Robinson: Town’s nine goal striker has joined Torquay for the rest of the season on loan.

Made a flying start to the campaign but has not scored since October 16 and has been forced to settle for a place on the bench in recent weeks.

Dean Holden: The right back has left Shrewsbury after an 18-month stint at the club. Had a loan spell with Rotherham earlier in the season and has reached an agreement to settle the remainder of his contract.

Hakan Duyan: The 19-year-old goalkeeper has moved on without making a first team appearance. Has been signed by Turkish Super League club Gaziantepspor.

    Wow,

an awesome number of changes, but i guess Turner needs to make them to make a realistic push for promotion, our last nine matches haven’t shown that the current team were sufficiently capable of winning regularly enough and changes needed to be made.

Hopefully this will be enough to drive our midfield urgency up a gear or two to better supply our attackers, the defense too will hopefully stand firm and bring the ball out to the rest of the team with more conviction.

All in all busy busy, let’s hope Turner and the boys can win the next few games and stay firmly in an automatic promotion place.

Sorry Steve but they need to get into a promotion spot rather than stay in one. They’re not even in play-off land right now.

As a lifelong Town supporter, now living in France, I can remember the heady days of Turner’s first reign as manager. I am sure that he is the right man and that the Town will occupy one of the automatic promotion places at the end of the season.
Great win tonight and hopefully more points on Saturday, Southend away, and next Tuesday, Lincoln away.
This season the attendances have been very good and the fans need to continue supporting the Town.
I always try and get to a match when I am in England.
Keep up the good work and then Division 1 next season.
