Shrews slipping out of play-offs
Monday 31st January 2011, 8:05PM GMT.
Shrewsbury Town have slipped down to seventh in League Two after their 1-0 loss to Bury combined with other weekend results.
Ryan Lowe’s goal was enough to see off Shrewsbury in front of the live Sky cameras and three points for Gillingham means Town are down to eighth – five points behind third place Rotherham who occupy the final automatic promotion spot.
Town’s form is a worry for supporters with Graham Turner’s men having won just once since their stunning derby victory over Hereford in late November.
Elsewhere in League Two Chesterfield remain on top of the pile, just, after surviving a scare at home to Peter Taylor’s Bradford City.
Substitute Jordan Bowery came to the League Two leaders’ rescue as the 19-year-old striker came off the bench to level deep into injury time with his first league goal for the club to deny the Bantams victory at the b2net Stadium.
Danny Whitaker had fired the home side into an 11th-minute lead, but Dave Syres levelled within seconds.
James Hanson put Bradford 2-1 ahead seven minutes after the restart, and he looked to have clinched the points for the visitors until Bowery finished from close range three minutes into stoppage time.
Rotherham climbed into the top three after a resounding 4-0 home win over bottom-of-the-table Stockport.
The game was effectively over by half-time after debutant Aaron Brown’s own goal, Ryan Taylor and Adam Le Fondre put the Millers 3-0 up, and Taylor’s second 12 minutes after the break cemented the victory.
Gillingham, who started the day in ninth, hauled themselves into the play-off places with a 2-1 home win over Aldershot.
Cody McDonald’s double, the second of them in the final minute of normal time, secured all three points, and Alex Rodman’s fine injury-time strike could not prevent a first defeat for new Shots manager Dean Holdsworth.
Mid-table Southend denied Barnet the chance to lift themselves out of the bottom two with a 2-0 victory at Underhill.
Anthony Grant gave the visitors a 25th-minute lead and Barry Corr made sure with a second with 67 minutes gone.
Oxford keeper Ryan Clark ensured his side emerged from their clash with Cheltenham with something to show for their efforts after a late penalty save.
Clark kept out Wes Thomas’ spot-kick to deny the visitors victory after the striker had fired the visitors into a 25th-minute lead.
Tom Craddock equalised within eight minutes and both sides had goals ruled out before the Oxford keeper’s late heroics.
Crewe Alexandra dropped to fourth after their home clash with Accrington Stanley was called off due to a frozen pitch.
