Former players came back to haunt Town in a week where our promotion chances were hit hard, writes Shrewsbury Town blogger James Pugh.

One league win in nine tells its own story, but amazingly we are still only five points off the automatic promotion places.

The problem is the teams around us have got games in hand and the teams below us are catching up.

Consecutive away defeats to Oxford and Bury made it a terrible week for Town fans, made worse by the fact that we were undone by goals from former players Hall, Constable and Lowe.

More frustratingly is that Lowe and Constable have blossomed since leaving Town  – which begs the question: should we have let them go?

Quite simply our form is poor and not good enough if we want promotion.

It’s time to recall Harrold and Robinson and bring in some new defenders because not being able to keep clean sheets is hitting us hard.

Holden isn’t good enough and we need a quality centre half to complement Sharps and Cansdell-Sherriff.

Quite a bit has been said about tiredness taking its toll on the players.

The truth is that we are no worse off than the other sides and we have got a big enough squad to cope with the demands of League Two.

Following two disappointing results on the road, Town return to the comfort of their home with a game against struggling Burton on Tuesday.

Burton are only one point from the bottom and have only won once away in the league all season, so this has got to be seen as a must win game.

Town then return to the road with a game against mid-table Southend on Saturday who we drew at home with back in November.

January has proved to be an awful month for Town and as they say things can only get better!

If they don’t then we can kiss goodbye to promotion.

    James,

couldn’t agree more with all you’ve said there, however I would add that tactically we’re wavering, swinging from one formation to another and I’m sure Turner has good reason for doing this but it seems to not be working either.

Whatever players or formations we go for we must go with it 100% and make it work. I wonder if our captain is doing quite enough verbally in each game to keep us on our toes, from the stands it doesn’t always look like it, strong authority in a game can turn a match.

We all need to get behind the lads, as we have been so far, but perhaps now more than ever, confidence is obviously lower than it should be, Turner is still building his ideal team and I don’t think we need to be writing our season off just yet, all teams go through bad spells, our has gone on longer than we’d all like but the right man is in charge Town will get there, lovely if it was this season but maybe we will need to build more and wait till next.

    Dear me, more lazy blogging.
‘mid-table Southend’, I suppose that will be the Southend who have 3 points less than Shrewsbury with a game in hand ?
And Burton who are indeed only 1 point off the bottom, but have a mere 6 games in hand over the mighty Shrewsbury who are 14 points in front of them.
Take those blue and amber tinted spectacles off and smell the coffee, CURRENT form table Town in 21st place, which also shows a certain Southend in 3rd place.

    once an optimist

Let’s get real. We are a mid-table outfit with delusions of grandeur.
Unless Salop can win the next 3 in a row we will be going nowhere fast.
It wouldn’t be the end of the world, we are solvent and have some good young players for the future. A good manager and great facilities.

we should be looking to next season, i am sure gt is. town need a win tomorrow, to keep the shrews in the top half of the league, which on current form is about what they deserve.

we are not a promo seeking side nor will we reach the playoffs. in spite of a cracking start to the season, town have flattered to deceive. successive lads up front have failed either through lack of service or inexperience. the midfield may be improved with the alleged loaning of david davies ex wolves

in spite of all this we tend to give late goals away. let us hope our squad improves in the 19 games we have left otherwise roll on next season.

finally exactly what have town won since that ruddy lenny the lion badge was introduced. i will tell you nothing. town will never win anything until our traditional 3 loggerheads and a floreat salopia badge is restored to the left breast of our team. so think on chairman no matter who manages the squad, gt, sir alex or arsene wenger, town will never win anything with that ruddy badge

    floreat salopia. atcham jack
