Recalled goalkeeper Ben Smith believes the come-from behind triumph at Accrington Stanley can “re-light Shrewsbury Town’s season”.

Town secured their first victory since November 23 with a 3-1 triumph at the Crown Ground last night to end a five-match winless streak.

The success, which saw James Collins score twice and Mark Wright grab his 11th goal of the season, took Shrewsbury back into the play-offs ahead of Saturday’s mouth-watering visit of League Two leaders Chesterfield.

And Smith, who was given his first League start since August 14 at the expense of Chris Neal, believes it was a vital success for Town’s promotion prospects.

“It was a great result,” said the former Doncaster man.

“We hadn’t performed as well as we know we can in the previous couple of games.

“But everyone dug in, worked hard and it was a fantastic result at what is a really hard place to go.

“The lads are buzzing and hopefully this can relight our season.”

Smith was delighted to earn a recall and responded with an impressive display,

“I pulled my groin at the start of the season which was really disappointing because I had come here to play games and show people what I can do,” added the 24-year-old.

“But you have to take your opportunity when it comes around.

“Chris has done really well, but when called upon you have to be ready and hopefully I can take my chance and we can get back up to where we should be.”

Meanwhile, boss Graham Turner was delighted with his side’s efforts.

“We desperately needed the win,” he said. “It was a really hard battle and we know they play with a lot of heart, endeavour and spirit and that’s the first thing we had to match them for.

“We were a bit unfortunate their goal was deflected but the response and reply was terrific.

“We got the goal back quickly and always looked dangerous on the break.

“Given all the circumstances we found ourselves in, four points from the last two matches away from home isn’t a bad return.”
