Shrews on the slide with Barnet heartache
Monday 17th January 2011, 8:34AM GMT.
Town’s slide down the league table continues following late heartache at Barnet, writes Shrewsbury Town blogger James Pugh.
Five league games since we thrashed Hereford at home in November and no victories – disturbing fact for a team who are supposedly challenging for promotion.
It all seemed to be going well for Town on Saturday against lowly Barnet – until Dean Holden failed to clear and let the opposition grab a late equaliser.
The result won’t have done the players any good in terms of confidence, which must be very low at the moment.
The fact is if we are genuinely serious about getting promotion then we should be beating teams like Barnet comfortably.
At the moment the next win looks a long way away and somehow Turner has got to get the players’ confidence at the levels it was earlier in the season.
I would also advise Turner to start playing Harrold and Robinson in the team rather than rely on the inexperienced kids Collins and Bradshaw.
I am all for giving youngsters a go if they are good enough, but now is the wrong time.
Just what has happened to Ainsworth? He has had success with Hereford in this division before and showed glimpses of it at the beginning of the season for Town.
I know he has had his injury problems, but a player with so much talent should be destroying defences in this league and needs to regain his confidence and be more positive.
With him on one wing and Wright on the other, we should be scoring bags full of goals, not relying on the odd one to win games.
In transfer news Town added some much needed strength to their defence by signing young centre back, Grandison from Coventry.
He’s a guy who has had first team experience at other clubs and at six foot four should add some commanding presence in our defence.
Next up for town is a tricky away game at mid-table Accrington on Tuesday.
Accrington have only lost two games at home in the league all season and score plenty of goals.
Town beware!

James,
agree as we all do that Town should be winning games comfortably and if you look at the decisions that Turner made for bringing these players in or keeping some that were already at the club when he came back well he’s obviously made some good decisions, however Robinson just hasn’t done his job as he did earlier in the season nor has Harold, you just can’t leave strikers in a team that don’t score.
I strongly believe that there’s a lot more to all this than meets the eye. Namely the training sessions. There is insufficient evidence in the 90 minutes of each game of play that the Town players have received the correct training, nor that the Captain is impressing this upon the players strongly enough during play.
There is often confusion around the edge of the box in defence and again in midfield when long periods of time go by without decisive forward play, we simply pass it around too much. You here the frustration transmitted to the crowd and shouts of step up a gear or go forward or have a shot are heard now. This is completely wrong and managing effort in the right departments is the responsibility of the trainer.
Get one who can do the job, one who can drive play in all areas of the field over 90 minutes as is shown at clubs such as Chesterfield. If we are to play better it start with training and ends with the evidence of that training on the field…it’s just not there….get it changed Turner.

Steve in Oxfordshire – how often do you watch the team train to make your comments?
I agree with James about Harrold & Robinson – everyone is saying get back to how we played at the start of the season – well we started with those 2 and they did the job, especially Robinson. i don’t think he would have missed the excellent chances against Morecambe that Collins & Bradshaw did, though I think Tom is an exellent prposect.
Its easy to say play like Chesterfield when they’re running away with the league, but more difficult to do!

Collins is a proven goal scorer at this level, just not for us – yet.
Ainsworth had Raven behind him at the start of the season…
