Ian Sharps predicts Morecambe bounceback for Shrews

Captain Ian Sharps today backed Shrewsbury Town to bounce back from the Bank Holiday blues to put their League Two promotion dream back on track this weekend.

Town suffered their first home defeat of the campaign on Monday when they went down by a single goal to Crewe.

That was widely regarded as their poorest display since manager Graham Turner arrived back at the club last summer.

And Sharps has now called for an immediate response when lowly Morecambe visit the Greenhous Meadow on Saturday.

“Monday was probably our worst performance of the season and we let ourselves down,” said the former Tranmere centre half.

“We just couldn’t get going or get a foothold in the game. I thought Crewe played well, but we realise we didn’t perform to our capabilities.

“We had a sit down after the game as a group and talked about things that we need to put right.

“As players, we have gone away and thought about it as well and everyone will be ready to hopefully put things right in another home game on Saturday”

Town are now in sixth position after a one-point return from their two games in 2011 so far. And a six-point gap has now opened up between them and the automatic promotion spots.

And, while Sharps is keen for his side to re-discover their encouraging early season form, he is aware there are plenty of twists and turns still to come.

“If we keep playing like we did on Monday then there is no point looking at league tables,” added the 30-year-old.

“But we have still got more than half of the season to play yet so there is a long way to go and we are still very much in touch.”
