Aroon Fiaz wins again but is not happy

Telford's Aroon Fiaz was his own harshest critic despite recording a points whitewash in his second professional contest on Friday night.

The first person of Asian descent from the town to box as a professional remains undefeated after a four-round success,

writes Craig Birch.

Fiaz, known as Harry, featured on Tommy Owens' show in the Holte Suite at Aston Villa against late replacement Martin Antos, stepping in for pull out Ben Heap.

The Czech fighter was shipped in and came across a lethargic Fiaz who, after six months out of the ring, tired easily.

The Wellington Boxing Academy graduate stuck to his jab and kept his European adversary at range, but lacked the energy to go up the gears.

The 23-year-old has undergone surgery on his nose and suffered from a sinus infection since his last ring time, leaving him unable to spar for the last month. He was also coming down to middleweight.

The result looks spotless on paper, rolling over a galvanised and spirited Antos by a 40-36 verdict with referee Shaun Messer.

But Fiaz wasn't happy with his performance, having scored a fourth round TKO on his paid debut over James Conroy at the same venue in May.

He said: "People have told me I'm being a bit hard on myself, but I can do so much better. If I boxed to my best, I'd have got him out of there.

"I found out the hard way how lack of sparring and dropping too much weight can affect you. I'll be going back up to super middle after this.

"I grew tried very quickly and I knew that at the end of the first round, because my legs felt heavy when I got back to the corner.

"I was thinking to myself 'how am I going to get through the next two rounds.' I used my jab and kept him away enough to work and come through the second and third.

"I had next to no energy for the fourth, but my corner just told me to grit my teeth and get through. It was, by no means, my best display but I got the job done."

Fiaz is unlikely to box again until early next year, as he wants time for his nose to heal properly and to build up his training again.

He said: "I'll have a brief rest, then it's back in the gym and start working towards the fitness I need. I'll have as much sparring as possible, then my next fight."
