Hankey, world titlist in 2000 and 2009, took on three-time Lakeside champion Martin Adams in the Group Five decider.

It was the first men's competition, sponsored by the sports' brand Winmau and events company Shownights.com, at the Norbreck Castle Hotel in Blackpool.

Hankey and 'Wolfie' are stalwarts of the circuit and have clashed three times at the World Championship, with 'the Count' seeing him off in 2009 on the way to claiming glory.

Adams dumped out at the quarter-final stage in 2005 and 2007 and again in Blackpool, 4-1, for a place in the last eight.

Hankey had won four games to set up the tie with victories over Steve Rumble (4-0), Scott McParlin (4-2), Keith Moore (4-0) and Jeffrey Sparidaans (4-1).

The 48-year-old, who lives in Aqueduct, returned to the same venue to compete in Sunday's European Open and reached the last 32.

This time, he opened with revenge over the man who beat him in the 2001 Lakeside final, John 'Boy' Walton, by 4-0 whitewash.

Two 4-2 successes, over Steve Holden and Darryl Fitton, paired him with Carl Dennel, who reversed the scoreline to end his challenge.
