Shropshire pub worker King had enjoyed an impressive run to the last four at the Imperial Hotel.

His progress included wins against world No 4 Michael Hope in the last 32, former snooker professional Eddie Barker in the last 16 and 2014 and 2015 Australian champion Michael Scherrie.

But King, who won the English Open in 2002 during his spell as a full-time snooker player, was beaten 10-3 by fellow qualifier Shaun Chipperfield.

King works full-time for his parents John and Norma at The Bull's Head Inn in Chelmarsh, near Bridgnorth.
