The Telford competitor was hindered by a lack of straight-line speed in the last round at Donington Park and currently lies fifth in the standings.

But the 23-year-old reckons the Excelr8 Motorsport team has cracked the problem.

And he now anticipates a podium bid over the weekend of May 7-8 after making the top three in both the corresponding races last year.

Smith, who drives for the MINI UK VIP Customer team, said: "Donington was pretty frustrating in the end.

"We know we had the capability to be fighting for the podium if it hadn't been for the problem.

"The team is confident they've got to the bottom of the issue, so we're all looking forward to being able to attack at Brands Hatch.

"We went well there last year and I'm looking forward to running on the Grand Prix track again.

"Hopefully, we can have two really strong races at Brands without any dramas."

The MINI Challenge will run in Kent as support to the British round of the prestigious Blancpain GT Series Sprint Cup, where Laurens Vanthoor and Frederic Vervisch currently share the lead.
