Defeated Shropshire finish in the bottom half

Shropshire finished the season in the bottom half of the BDO British Inter-Counties Championship Division Four after defeat to Middlesex.

The county darters suffered a late collapse in their last fixture of the season and fell to a 29-10 loss away from home,

Sunday's final two pairings went against them by an incredible 16-2 score-line, after they had led 10-8 at the end of Saturday. They fell from fourth to sixth in the final table.

Middlesex gained three extra points as the winning county, highlighting the difference between the two as the match finished 26-10.

Play began with the women's B affairs, where the two sides played out a 3-3 draw. Grace Angell, 14, made it five wins from five for Shropshire.

She averaged 13.52 in a 3-2 last leg victory over Julie James (14.53), with Suzanne Lane top scoring for the visitors with 15.07 beating Jenny Sallans (14.56) by the same verdict.

Sophie Fawcett, 15, fell in another last leg battle with 13.27 against the hosts' Lady of the Match Christina Moran (14.82).

Shropshire were on top after the men's B meeting, which they won 10-7. Peter Eley led the way with 26.84 in a 3-0 whitewash of Daniel Wheatley (18.93).

Ian Pallett (24.64) also drubbed Barry Holtom (23.89) without dropping a leg, while Middlesex's Chris Moore (24.24) shut-out Brian Hickman (22.68) in reverse.

Darters returned to the oche the following day, where Shropshire's lead was erased as they went behind after losing the women's A clashes 6-0.

Lisa Brosnan excelled for Middlesex with 20.34 in a 3-1 victory over Marie Riggs, whose 18.83 was the highest losing average.

And proceedings went from bad to worse after the men's A finale, where Shropshire were hammered 10-2. Play was upgraded to a best-of-seven format.

Tony Andrews impressed with the highest average of the weekend, racing to 32.32 for Middlesex in a 4-0 whitewash of Roger Taylor (21.83).

Andrew Chatter replied with 22.70 in a 4-3 reverse against Terry Andrews (23.32), with Richard Parker (22.19) Shropshire's second winner over Steven Hyatt (22.50).

The fixtures for next season in Division Four have already been released, with Shropshire travelling to Norfolk on the weekend beginning September 3.
