Hornsey will be riding Kawasaki ZX-10 superbike machinery when he competes in Britain's top motorbike series for the first time.

The 22-year-old from Ludlow was snapped up by GR Motorsport's team owner, Brent Gladwin, who has been following the young rider's career closely for the last five years.

Team WD-40 superbikes runs under the Sheffield-based GR Motorsport banner, which this year will be celebrating its 21st year in the motorsport industry.

Gladwin, who is also team principal of Team WD-40, said: "I have known Sam for quite a while and his father, Mark, who was also a racer.

"We've watched him make his way through the classes and he had a brilliant year last year in the 600cc supersport class, claiming a couple of podiums.

"We felt he should be the next good, young rider to join our team. We have a lot of aspirations for him.

"Although there are a lot of quality riders in the championship we hope he will be challenging for things."

The BSB will this year contain 27 riders, who will compete for the crown over 12 rounds.

Some of those events will be triple-headers, with three races staged over a weekend as the teams travel as far afield as Knockhill in Scotland and even Assen in north Holland.

Gladwin said: "This will be Sam's debut season in the actual British Superbike Championship and his debut with us at Team WD-40."

It marks the start of another busy year for Shropshire's top racer, which will also see Bridgnorth-based Michael Rutter compete in the British superstock class this year.

Rutter will also race on the roads again at the North West 200 in Northern Ireland, the Isle of Man TT, the Classic TT and the Macau GP in China.
