Tony Jones takes on the road warrior

Telford's Tony Jones will be in it for the long haul when he undertakes his next ring date at Aston Villa Football Club tomorrow night.

The Brookside banger took out Dean Evans in just 80 seconds last time out two months ago but expects a different test this time,

writes Craig Birch.

In the other corner will be the road warrior Kristian Laight, who will be competing in his 222nd pro contest, over four three minute rounds at welterweight.

'Mr Reliable' has been stopped just five times in 204 paid defeats, having been in with prospects up and down the land.

So it's safety first for unbeaten Jones, who has only completed a six twos with Matt Seawright, apart from the Evans knockout, since turning over.

The 23-year-old factory worker feels he needs the distance, too, to test himself and his fitness as he settles into the duration.

Prospect - Tony Jones believe he could box for the Midlands title in the not-too-distant future.

He said: "It would be foolish to go in there and try to blast him out, I could do with the rounds and there's every chance I will get them here.

"I've got a little game-plan for the night, but I've got every respect for Kristian. He's there for me to learn and to help, in a way.

"I'll have my wits about me, as he won't think twice about getting me out of there if he gets the opportunity. Likewise, I'll take the chance if it comes along.

"I just want to get comfortable and work the jab, then see where it takes me. I feel I'll be a fighter who comes on strong late on."

Jones has ambition and wants to shoot up the rankings quickly. The management of Kellie Maloney gave him great exposure for his debut.

'Blaze' is keeping his feet on the ground, for now, but is keen to get busy and gain the experience needed to make the next step.

He said: "I'm content to stay in the shadows but I know the area champion, Rob Hunt, and most of the contenders to the belt.

"One day, I'll get my chance to prove I'm a force in the Midlands."

Jones has been backed by sponsors Carbon Claw Sports Equipment, Milward Scaffolding Services, Dr Greens, Brookshaw & Stuart Ltd, B Clean Ltd and Clarkes Solicitors in the lead up.

Tickets, priced at £30 and £60 ringside, are still available from Jones on 07903 538 008 or coach Brian Robb on 07910 290 869.

Coach travel is also being arranged from Telford & Wrekin Boxing Club's venue on Hills Lane in the town to the venue and back, costing just £7.
