Adlington, from Bayston Hill, is studying sport and recreation management at Edinburgh University and represented Scotland at Glasgow 2014 where she scooped +78kg women's gold.

The 28-year-old, who will represent Great Britain at this month's European Games, won a vote to claim the coveted prize.

Adlington, who is also a five-time national champion, took to Twitter to express her delight at the event.

The 2016 Olympic hopeful had attended an event for the charity Dame Kelly Holmes Trust at Murrayfield earlier in the day.

And she tweeted: "What a great one today has been, at Dame Kelly Holmes Trust graduation event for the young people at Murrayfield which was a fantastic event and tonight have been voted Scottish Student Sport women's athlete of the year."

She told the Shropshire Star: "The last year has obviously been a very good one and it is always nice to be recognised."
