But Donnington's Harrison Cutler is no longer a part of the competition in the most senior Class B, for entrants born in 2001, at 56kg.

Cutler was forced to pull out of his area decider through illness, so did not make the trip to the YMCA in Stoke-on-Trent on Sunday.

Club-mate Bradley Thompson, stepson of coach Tristan Davies, competed at 34kg and scored a good victory over Ryan Humphries, from the Second City gym in Birmingham, to progress.

Davies' gym also got Carlos Steward through a walk over with no opponent to box in the highest weight of Class A (2002), a whopping 72kg.

Telford girl Simran Kaur (second from right) will box a straight final in the Schools competition.

Wellington's Raheem Mohammed did the business to bring one of three West Midlands titles to Merridale, in his first year representing the club.

Mohammed impressed to triumph at 48kg in Class B on points with a keenly-contested split decision against Lewis Proffitt, from Stoke Staffs.

He's joined by club-mates Kara Murray and Simran Kaur on the female side of the competition, who claimed area honours without boxing.

The two Telford teenagers benefitted from a bye with both in Class B (2001), Kaur at 43kg and Murray at 62kg in their first Schoolgirls year.

It proved the perfect birthday present for delighted coach Khalid Hussain, also from the town, on the same day the experienced trainer turned 41.

The tournament resumes with the national quarter-finals at Great Barr Leisure Centre in Birmingham a week on Sunday, giving the West Midlands champions a break.

The combined sections of Merseyside & Cheshire take on the North-West in pre-quarters this weekend to determine their opponents.
