Tigers start blank for tonight's cup decider

Telford Tigers head coach Tom Watkins will start with a "fresh sheet of paper" in tonight's British Challenge Cup final against Manchester Phoenix.

Tigers lead 3-1 from last week's first leg in Altrincham, with the lure of a first-ever double of major trophies up for grabs.

But Manchester have already beaten the Tigers once at Telford Ice Rink this season and Watkins wants his players to start from square one this evening.

He said: "We have got ourselves into a very good position in this game, but we can't sit back.

"We went into the second leg of the semi-final with a 0-0 approach and we'll do exactly the same thing again. The guys will come out looking to win the match, starting with the first period.

"It is all about having a fresh sheet of paper and starting like we did in the last tie.

"We won't approach it in any other way, as Manchester have got very good offensive ability. We've got to be smart against that."

Watkins is famously cautious when it comes to preparing for major finals, with his players having enjoyed a relaxed week in the build-up to tonight's encounter.

He added: "This is the biggest match of the season for us. At this stage every match seems to get bigger.

"The guys had their first day back after the weekend on Tuesday, but some even skated with the NIHL side on Monday.

"Everyone is keen to get back on the ice as soon as possible, which is great to see."

Much of the Tigers' success this season has been built on an experienced line-up, with Jason Silverthorn, Jonathan Weaver and Peter Szabo all boasting years of top-level involvement.

The Tigers surpremo, who won a string of titles as a player, believes that background could prove crucial against Manchester.

He said: "Experience is going to be very important in the final. In every game this season, our leadership has been key to this group of players.

"Our experienced guys have the ability to stay calm in all situations, and calm the room as well."
