Idris Mohammed will return to Birmingham on Sunday to face a new adversary in the first national stages of the England Junior Championships.

Mohammed and Husan Hussain both represent Wellington Boxing Academy, although the latter will benefit from a bye again for the second weekend running.

But Mohammed will be at the Emerald Club in Small Heath to tackle Aqib Fiaz, from Northside in Manchester, at 60kg in the combined boxers born in 1999 and 2000 category.

Husan is at 42kg with Donnington's Ryan Tyrer also still involved in the competition having walked over last weekend's area finals at 52kg, writes Craig Birch.

Mohammed left with a Midlands vest that Sunday at the Irish Centre in Digbeth, prevailing from a Shropshire derby with Ludlow's Chadd Woodfield.

The bout proved scrappy as Mohammed dragged him into a fight and Woodfield, who paid the price for being docked points on the way as he lost unanimously on points.

He was punished for holding and then lunging in on his opponent by the man in the middle, which cost him with the judges as all five sided with Mohammed.

Trainer Mo Fiaz said: "I think it was purely experience that got Idris through and his game-plan worked, Chadd couldn't box as he normally does as a result.

"It's all about commanding the centre of the ring and boxing aggressively now, which I think he did really well and we have high hopes for him.

"We have only been going five years and we are still waiting for our first national champion, although we've had a few finals and area titles.

"To go that one better would be a fantastic achievement for us and you do think about it at each tournament. It could be Idris or Husan."

There was a painful exit at 50kg in the boxers born 2000 section for Wellington's Hamza Hussain, who was stopped in the third round.

Two stiff right hooks to the body saw the referee take action in the last session, issuing a standing count and then waving him off.

Liam McCarthy, from Bell Green in Coventry, progressed at 5okg in the boxers born 2000 category, where Ludlow's Terry Smith was at 66kg.

Smith pushed opponent Milo Gallagher, from Bulkington in Warwickshire, close but found himself on the wrong end of a narrow split decision.
