The sole Shropshire presence was a convincing winner against Dan Buttery at the Lea Hall Sports & Social Club in Birmingham on Sunday.

Key took command to score a unanimous points victory over Buttery, from Tom Lowe Boxing Club in Staffordshire, and progress into the first national stage.

The 22-year-old came in fresh after two walk-overs led him to the area decider at 60kg in Class B - fighters from 11 to 20 bouts - and he made that advantage count.

The next round will see the region merge into the East Midlands a week on Sunday, with the venue still to be decided.

Meanwhile, two-time national finalist and former Tri-Nations title winner Akash Tuqir has defected from Wellington Boxing Academy.

Both the 16-year-old, a formidable competitor at 52kg, and trainer Khalid Hussain have joined Merridale Boxing Club in Wolverhampton.

Tuqir boxed under their banner for the first time on last Saturday's club show at the Diamond Banqueting Suite on the city's Skinner Street.

He immediately impressed with a unanimous points win over fellow national finalist Mark Chamberlain, from Team Wiseman in Hampshire.

And the boxing journey is just beginning for Telford teenager Simran Kaur, who took part in a female skills (exhibition) bout as a member of Merridale.

The 13-year-old, a student at Hadley Learning Community, put on a show for the audience against Porsche Hubbersty, from Clayton Boxing Club in Accrington.
