The 21-year-old, who is a product of the Telford and Wrekin Hockey Club youth development programme, found the net in a tense shoot-out against hosts Belgium to seal a third-placed finish.

Goodfield had earlier won a penalty corner that resulted in England grabbing a last-ditch equaliser to take the game into the shoot-out where players run from the 23 metre line in a one-on-one showdown with the goalkeeper.

England won 4-3 to claim their first medal at this level since 1998.

Forward Goodfield had played a key role in helping his side progress from the group stage, netting in victories over France and Poland.

England also beat Belgium to secure a 100 per cent record but were edged out 2-1 in a tight semi-final clash with Holland, who went on to beat Germany 5-2 in the final.

Goodfield, who started playing at Telford at the age of 10 and has figured for his country at under-16, 18 and 21 level, still represents Shropshire but plays his club hockey for Sheffield University where he is taking a sports degree.

The Telford & Wrekin connection was increased by the presence of head coach Steve Floyd who is the England team manager.

David's father Gwynne is the chairman of Telford & Wrekin Hockey Club, and he was thrilled to see England's efforts rewarded.

"It was a fantastic achievement and well deserved because they worked really hard," he said.

"It's also great for our club to have a former player competing and Steve also involved, because we are trying raise our profile and things like this can only help."

Telford & Wrekin field five men's teams, two ladies' sides and two junior outfits and welome new members.

They are holding their registration day on September 6 at St George's Sports and Social Club. For further details go to www.telfordhockeyclub.co.uk.
