Johanna Konta is the remaining British hope

Tennis ace Johanna Konta was today hoping to keep the British flag flying at the AEGON GB Pro-Series in Shropshire.

The 21-year-old was the only one of 10 members of the home contingent to come through the opening round of singles on a hectic day of action at The Shrewsbury Club.

Konta saw off Latvia’s Diana Marcinkevica 6-4, 6-0 to set up a second-round meeting with former world No.60 Julie Coin today.

“Credit to her, she played quite well,” said Konta, after her first outing since reaching the second round of the US Open. “First rounds are always a little tricky. Everyone’s getting the feel for the place, the courts and getting back into routine.

“I’m just happy that I was able to play better and better throughout the match and get myself more and more solid. It went well.”

Coin came from a set down to defeat Sheffield’s Anna Fitzpatrick 3-6, 6-1, 6-3.

It was a difficult day for other top ranked British players including Naomi Broady and Tara Moore who suffered defeats. The major surprise of the opening round came with the exit of the No.1 seed, the world No.104 Kristyna Pliskova of the Czech Republic.

She bowed out to former world No.15 Aravane Rezai of France in a tight three set match, 7-6, 4-6, 6-2.

There remains plenty of home interest in the doubles with the pairings of Konta and Amanda Elliott and Samantha Murray and Emily Webley-Smith reaching the quarter-finals, along with another home hope Lucky Brown who is partnering Ireland’s Amy Botwell.
