Great Britain’s sportsmen today began the second week of the Olympics looking to build on a golden weekend at London 2012.

Gymnast Beth Tweddle and world champion hurdler Dai Greene were the host nation’s leading medal hopes as Team GB aimed to follow up their eight golds in a stunning weekend of action.

Tweddle was among the favourites for the uneven bars, which was set to start at 2.50pm at the North Greenwich Arena.

And Greene, who claimed world championship gold in the 400m hurdles in South Korea last year, will look to bounce back from a disappointing performance in the heats when he lines up in the final in at 8.45pm.

Britain’s equestrian team were among the medal contenders in the team showjumping event, which was due to resume for a second day of competition at 2pm.

And cyclist Jason Kenny, who was selected ahead of Olympic legend Sir Chris Hoy for the individual sprint, raced in the semi-finals this afternoon with hopes high of another medal to follow the team sprint gold he helped Britain achieve last week.

Sprint canoeist Tim Brabants was due to compete in the heats at Eton Dorney this morning as he looked to match the success Britain’s rowers at the same venue last week.
