Shropshire archer Alison Williamson today admitted she let her fans down after being dumped out of her sixth Olympics.
The 40-year-old, from Church Stretton, lost 7-3 to Mongolia’s Bishindee Urantungalag in the last 32 at Lord’s to miss out on a medal in her GB record-equalling Games appearance.
And Williamson revealed her regrets as she went out in front of a packed Lord’s audience.
She said: “I’m very disappointed and sad I’m not going to be out there again with the great support we’ve had from the home crowd.
“It’s amazing, so thank you to everyone who has come and supported, everyone involved and everyone who is making it a fantastic Games. I’m just sad I couldn’t do more.
“You want to go out and give them a good show and come back for more. I’m disappointed I let people down but that’s the way it is.”
Williamson made her Olympic debut at Barcelona in 1992 and won individual bronze at Athens in 2004, but insisted her home Games was the best yet – despite the result.
“Definitely the best, just from the crowd factor and also the venue is absolutely amazing,” she said.
“Watching all the shots the TV is getting of the archers looks great and the British public have been brilliant.”

I strongly dislike the expression 'crashes out' which suggests that the archer made a complete mess of her event rather than being beaten fair and square by a better competitor.
Would not "Alison Williamson defeated by ..." have been more sympathetic? To reach the Olympic archery (or any other) team at all is no mean feat and at that level, competing against the very best, someone has to win and someone has to lose. No need to be harsh about it.
