Bilal Shafayat batting for Shropshire
Monday 26th December 2011, 10:59AM GMT.
Former Nottinghamshire and Northamptonshire allrounder Bilal Shafayat will lead Shropshire’s charge for Minor Counties glory in 2012.
The 27-year-old, who scored 685 runs at an average of 40.29 for Wellington in the Birmingham League premier division last season, has agreed to become one of Shropshire’s professionals.
It seems likely there will also be a change should Shropshire pursue a second professional, with batsman Chris Murtagh not returning and spinner Andy Gray’s future in doubt.
Murtagh and former Kent seamer Neil Saker – who played the last four Minor Counties Championship games for Shropshire last term – are ruled out of consideration due to work, although their registrations will be retained by Shropshire with a view to possible occasional appearances.
And, while not closing the door totally on Gray, the spinner who has represented Shropshire since 2005 has been informed other options will be pursued.
“Chris and Neil are now working in London which makes it difficult for them to commit for the whole season, which is what we felt was needed from a professional,” said captain Ed Foster.
“Andy has been a great servant to Shropshire and he will not be forgotten at all.
“But we are going to look at our options for the second pro for 2012.
“The door is not totally shut on any player because we want to put together the strongest side we can.
“We felt it was right to tell Andy our plans and then re-assess nearer the start of the season.”
Foster is delighted with the addition of 27-year-old Shafayat, who has scored more than 6,000 runs in 132 First Class appearances.
“His record is very good, both in First Class cricket and in the league for Wellington last year,” added Foster.
“He comes with a glowing recommendation from Wellington and at this stage, I see him batting at three.”
