Don’t rest on laurels, manager tells AFC Telford
Monday 9th January 2012, 10:59AM GMT.
Cautious boss Andy Sinton has warned his much-changed AFC Telford United side not to rest on their laurels after a welcome win.
The Bucks – fielding three debutants – beat crisis club Kettering 3-1 on Saturday to boost their Blue Square Bet Premier survival bid.
Returning favourite Kyle Perry played a big part and new defender Chris Blackburn also shone, but it was Bristol City loanee Marlon Jackson who stole the show.
“We’ve definitely taken a step forward in terms of personnel,” said Sinton.
“We’ve added people who have been around the block, know what it’s all about and have been in scraps before.
“We’re a step forward but I don’t think you ever really turn a corner in football because you’re only as good as your last game.”
Sinton, active in the first week of the January transfer window, may make further moves.
But the Telford chief believes he will have to let players leave to make room for any reinforcements.
“I’ve got a couple of irons in fires,” said Sinton. “To bring any more in now I’ve probably got to self-generate.
“We’ve got three weeks now and if I see someone who I can add to the side to improve it then I will.
“Just because we beat Kettering on Saturday, it doesn’t mean we’re great again. There were things in my team’s performance which we can do better.”
* Two Telford players out on loan made their debuts on Saturday.
Striker Andy Brown could not get on the scoresheet for Nuneaton in his side’s 1-1 draw at Workington.
And fellow hitman Craig Farrell was also goalless for Hinckley, although he was named man of the match in a 4-0 victory over Eastwood.
