Midfielder Nathan Rooney is urging AFC Telford United manager Andy Sinton to keep faith in him for Sunday’s FA Trophy clash at Nuneaton.

The former Thomas Telford pupil, who joined the Bucks after leaving Premier League side Wolves in the summer, has started just two games this season.

But he caught the eye when coming on as a 42nd minute substitute for the injured Steve Jones during Tuesday’s 0-0 draw at home to York City and is eager to build on that promise.

“I’ve been patient in waiting for the opportunity to come,” said the 19-year-old. “I think I came in and took my chance on Tuesday – I looked bright.

“I like playing in that free role just off Browny, who I thought was superb and created a lot for me.

“I’m a creative player. I can still get a bit sharper but I thought I did well on the ball and I was pleased with my overall performance.

“Hopefully I can now cement a place in the team, hopefully the gaffer will keep his faith in me and I get a start in the Trophy on Sunday.”

Rooney admits it has taken him time to adapt to the very differing demands of non-League football and representing a part-time club after his release from Molineux.

“It’s a significant change,” said Rooney. “The big difference at the higher level is that it’s mostly about ball retaining whereas here it’s more ball re-gaining.

“Higher up there’s lots of pretty football but here you have to do the dirty work.

“We play good football as a team but sometimes you have to be nasty and that’s the difference down here – it’s more brutal.

“I think I’m adapting well and finding my feet and hopefully now I can get a good run of games to get used to the league.”
