Rallying call to save Royal British Legion clubs

There was so much relief from everyone involved in AFC Telford when the full time whistle blew writes Dan Clark.
After a spirited performance last week against Mansfield, the lads came into the game with a renewed confidence in the league that we hadn’t seen since September.
The only change from the Mansfield game was the introduction of Elliot Chamberlain, who I’m sure will try to impress over the next few weeks.
The fact that he is a Welsh U21 international is very promising and I’m sure he will be a useful addition for our strikeforce.
It was also brilliant to see Jay Smith in the squad again. His previous league experience is visible in the way he plays. He is a vital addition to our midfield as he connects the midfield and the attack well, providing brilliant balls forward. It also allows Davies to become more defensive, which is a massive benefit to us as he makes some crucial tackles in the middle of the park.
We were unlucky to lose to Barrow when we played them at Holker Street in October. We were victim to a few bad refereeing decisions and, unfortunately, it was a similar story again on Saturday. The game was dominated by some poor refereeing decisions, some that changed the course of the game dramatically.
The first half was an unlucky half for Barrow, who hit the crossbar and post in a matter of minutes, and they forced Ryan Young to produce an outstanding performance. We held them well though, even though there were spells where it looked like Barrow were definitely going to score. It was hard for either team to push further though, as the referee was successful in stopping and starting the game numerous times.
After our nervy first half, I was only hoping for a draw. Barrow were playing better than they did at their ground and even though we had a couple of chances, we never really produced anything with venom.
The second half, again, was dominated by the referee. The first major decision was to send Chris Sharp off for an off the ball challenge. Initially, the Barrow defender was climbing all over Sharp in an attempt to get the ball, so I thought we deserved a penalty. I didn’t see Sharp’s reaction to the defender for which he got sent off as I was watching the ball, but from people’s reactions within the ground, it seemed a very harsh decision.
I did feel then that we would do well to just see the game out. But we showed resilience and went forward to score. Steven Jones showed why we need his valuable experience to climb at the far post to head in. Whether the ball actually passed the line is another matter, as the Barrow players protested furiously at the lineswoman’s decision to give the goal. But I feel it was only justice as Telford had been victim to many bad decisions throughout the game.
The Bucks held tight for the win and the relief within the stadium was obvious to see. It wasn’t the best performance from the Bucks, but they worked hard, they had belief and it paid off. We now need to build on this and I believe we can. Luton will be a tough game on Tuesday, but I’m sure Sinton will have something planned to come away from Kenilworth Road with something.
