Boss Andy Sinton believes AFC Telford United’s slightly fortuitous victory over Barrow could mark a watershed in their season, declaring: “Maybe the worm has turned.”
Telford won 1-0 on Saturday thanks to a controversial goal from substitute Steve Jones, with the visitors protesting that the ball had not crossed the line.
Sinton was quick to admit his side – down to 10 men by that stage – might have been the beneficiaries of a stroke of good fortune, but feels that was long overdue for his Blue Square Bet Premier side.
“People say that luck evens itself out but I’m not so sure that happens – I think bigger clubs get more decisions going for them,” said Sinton.
“We maybe got something that’s gone in our favour on Saturday but I can probably list six games where things have gone against us – Barrow away springs to mind, where I think both their goals were debatable.
“As a manager, you know that some are going to go for you and some are going to go against you – you just hope there’s not too many that go against you that will cost you.
“I think we’ve had our fair share this season, so if Lady Luck has smiled on us then great.
“And maybe the worm has turned.”
The victory saw Telford climb to 17th in the league table and increase the gap between themselves and the four relegation places to five points.
“We were a point above the relegation zone before the game because we’ve had a poor run,” added Sinton.
“We got more solid last week and we’ve put on three points on Saturday, so hopefully that will give the boys a lift.
“We know we are up against it, but performances like this will stand us in good stead.”
Striker Chris Sharp will serve a three-match ban after his dismissal for violent conduct against the Cumbrians, starting with tomorrow’s trip to Luton Town.

Controversial goal ? Well only if you have a Barrow perspective of it. I was standing on the Jack Bentley Terrace level with the 6yd box and and i saw the whole ball over the line when the keeper tried to scoop it out of the net. Luckily the assistant referee saw it croos the line and gave the goal. Though moments earlier she had missed a blatent hand ball indise the Barrow area when Cain croos the ball. So as they say justice was done in the end.
Not the greatest performance from Telford but a very important win to hopefully put a halt to that slide down the table.
Jay Smith looks a class act in the middle of the park. Things brightened up when Craig Farrell and Steve Jones went up front. Farrell strong and impressive against a physically strong Barrow Centre backs. As for Steve Jones, well early days but the memories of what Tony Naylor did in his time at the old club come to mind.
