New signing Steve Jones today set his sights on guiding AFC Telford United to promotion – after revealing he had rejected a chance to return to the Football League.

Former Crewe, Burnley and Walsall forward Jones – who also earned 29 caps for Northern Ireland – turned 35 last month, but insists retirement is not on his agenda any time in the next few years.

And, after spending last season with Scottish Premier League side Motherwell, he admitted he had rejected the chance to go to League Two outfit Bristol Rovers in the summer.

“Bristol Rovers wanted to sign me and they offered me a two-year deal but it was too far really,” revealed the Crewe-based ace, who made his Telford debut as a substitute in Saturday’s 0-0 draw with Mansfield.

“I got offers from Motherwell and Bristol Rovers but I missed the family so I wanted to stay local if I could, and Telford suits me.

“Just for last Saturday’s game I was on non-contract but hopefully the gaffer will speak to the chairman and sort out a contract. I’d like to be here for the long term and get the club promoted if we can, that’s our aim and you never know. It’s a tough league but never say never.”

Jones has been without a club since rejecting Rovers’ overtures, though he did turn out for Blue Square Bet North side Droylsden earlier in the season.

And he believes the Telford fans will only start to see the best of him when he has a bit more game time under his belt.

“Thursday last week was my first training session in quite some time and Saturday was my first game in a while,” said Jones.

“It’s three months since I even kicked a ball and once I’ve got up to speed I’m sure the fans will be pleased with what I can do.”
