AFC Telford head for FA Cup Chelmsford test
Friday 11th November 2011, 11:11AM GMT.
AFC Telford United assistant manager Darren Read knows his players will have a sore head on Sunday morning, but he isn’t taking Saturday night FA Cup celebrations for granted.
The Bucks make the long trip south to take on Blue Square Bet South high-fliers Chelmsford City (3pm) and Read is predicting an aerial bombardment at Melbourne Park.
“We had them watched and there were 63 throw-ins during the game because it is such a tight pitch,” said Read.
“We’ve been doing some extra heading practice to combat all the throw-ins. The ball is going to be out of play a lot and it’s going to be a very stop-start game.
“But it’s the FA Cup and if the players can’t get up for the FA Cup then there is something wrong.”
“They say it is the Cup of dreams and we’re still living the dream at the moment.
“We want to go as far as we can. We’ve got to make sure at the very least that our name is in the hat for the second round draw, whether that is by winning the game or by bringing them back here and doing the job in midweek.”
Chelmsford head into the tie on the back of a 15 match unbeaten run stretching back to September 3, and Read is under no illusions of how tough the trip will be.
“The crowd will be up for it and they will want to take our scalp,” he added. “They’re on a long unbeaten run but we believe if we go there and play well enough that we can end that.
“We know they will be a good side. Their style is almost more suited to the Blue Square North than the south as they are very direct. They have a good mix of youth and experience.”
The Bucks have a near fully-fit squad to choose from with only long-term injury victim Adam Proudlock out, although Dwayne Samuels faces a late fitness test on his toe injury.
