Gainsborough boss no stranger to Bucks Head wins

Gainsborough Trinity boss Steve Housham is no stranger to shock victories at the New Bucks Head.

So, while AFC Telford will carry the tag of favourites into tomorrow’s FA Cup fourth qualifying round tie, they will no doubt be wary of Housham’s in-form Blue Square North outfit.

Lincolnshire-based Trinity have not reached the first round proper since 2006, but Housham’s own experiences tell him that victory isn’t out of the question.

“I was in the Brigg team that won 2-0 at Telford in the UniBond League in 2004,” he said.

“We certainly weren’t expected to get a result that day so that’s a good memory for me to take into tomorrow because that’s my only visit to Telford.

“And I think it’s a really good tie for us.

“We know it’s going to be tough because Telford are a good side but we are going there full of confidence.”

Gainsborough arrive in Shropshire riding high in third in Blue Square North after a 6-1 thumping of Eastwood on Tuesday.

And, while Housham would love nothing more than to guide the club into the top flight of non-League football this term, he treats every game with the same importance.

“We are not like these Premier League teams who moan about how many games there are – we want to play football,” he added. “The more games we have the better for me because the club enjoys it.

“The big thing for us at Telford is that the pressure is off a little bit. In the last two rounds we have played in we have been favourites – we beat Frickley who are one level below us and AFC Fylde who are two.

“That brings it’s own pressures but that’s off us tomorrow.

Housham must decide whether to recall Shropshire-based defender Gavin Cowan for the visit to his former club as he missed the last two games following the birth of his first son.
