Thrilled Young feeling at home at AFC Telford
Saturday 24th September 2011, 11:29AM BST.
Delighted AFC Telford United goalkeeper Ryan Young believes his two consecutive man-of-the-match displays prove he is at home in the top tier of non-League football.
The 31-year-old – who was expected to line-up between the posts again for this afternoon’s trip to Fleetwood – starred in last Saturday’s win over Bath City and the impressive midweek draw at Mansfield.
And he admits he is relishing playing on non-League’s biggest stage again – having made his bow as a teenager with the now-defunct Nuneaton Borough.
“I’ve waited a very long time to play in this league,” Young admitted.
“Before this season, the last time was when I was 18 at Nuneaton and I was young and naïve.
“It’s tough playing against professional players who clinical in front of goal – in the league below they didn’t always hit the target but in this division they make the keeper do something nine times out of 10.
“It took me a while to get used to it but I’m getting sharper by the game and I’m enjoying it.”
Meanwhile, defender Sean Newton is also relishing life among the elite – the left-back even proving his versatility by playing as a winger at Mansfield.
Newton, 23, has no long-term ambitions of playing in the more attacking role but was delighted to do a job for the team.
“It was a bit different but it’s only 20 yards further up the field and I enjoyed it,” he said. “We’d done some shape work in training and the gaffer had been trying a few different things out.”
