Spencer Weir-Daley joins AFC Telford United
Friday 26th August 2011, 11:23AM BST.
AFC Telford United today swooped for former Nottingham Forest striker Spencer Weir-Daley – and could press the pacy frontman into action for their weekend double bill.
Weir-Daley, who turns 26 in less than two weeks, has signed a deal until the end of the season and goes straight into the squad for tomorrow’s home Blue Square Bet Premier clash with Newport County and the Bank Holiday Monday trip to Tamworth.
The prolific striker was top scorer for Boston United with 16 goals last season as they missed out on promotion through the play-offs and has previously played at League level for Forest as well as Macclesfield, Lincoln City, Notts County and Bradford.
He has signed for the Bucks after a successful trial, which included scoring two goals in the 6-1 friendly win over Chasetown on Wednesday.
“He has pace and he is an off-the-shoulder striker,” said Sinton. “He comes with a pretty exceptional goal record – albeit at Conference North level.
“If you look at our strikers from last season then he was on a par with Andy Brown and ahead of the rest so hopefully he can make an impact.”
Sinton has been keen to sign an extra striker for some time and the need has been highlighted by his side’s record of just two goals from their first three games of the season.
“I first spoke to him just four days after we beat Guiseley in the play-off final but for one reason or another it didn’t really progress,” added the Telford chief. “He’s missed out on a decent pre-season but he’s a fit lad and he looked sharp when he played the other night.”
Meanwhile, Sinton has warned his players to be ready for another tough test tomorrow against a strong Newport County side.
Their line-up is packed with experience, including striker Craig McAllister –who was a consistent scorer for last season’s champions Crawley.
“We have to approach it in the right way but in the three games we’ve played I haven’t seen anything to suggest we are out of our depth,” said Sinton.
