Andy Sinton itching to get started at Cambridge
Tuesday 16th August 2011, 11:29AM BST.
AFC Telford United finally make their debut in the Blue Square Bet Premier tonight, with boss Andy Sinton insisting: “There’s nothing to fear.”
A travelling support of around 200 fans will follow the Bucks to Cambridge United for their first game in the top tier of non-League football, after Saturday’s opener at home to Luton Town was postponed on safety grounds.
Telford ended their seven-year journey to reclaim the status held by the old Telford United before it went bust in 2004 with play-off victory in May.
“It’s an exciting night and it will probably be an emotional night as well,” said Sinton.
“The club is celebrating getting back to where they were and everyone is looking forward to it, but we have to concentrate on playing a game of football.
“We’re optimistic but we’re under no illusions about what a tough challenge this season is going to be,” he added.
Youngest
“It’s a real step up for us, playing full-time teams most weeks, but we’ve earned our right to be here and we have got to believe in ourselves.
“There’s certainly nothing to fear.”
For Sinton, tonight’s clash represents a return to the club where his successful career started.
The former England winger remains the youngest ever player to turn out for Cambridge, having made his debut against Wolves aged 16 years, 228 days in November 1982.
“I will shut all that out until after the game tonight – it’s all about doing our jobs properly and focusing on getting the points.”
Striker Adam Proudlock is the only serious doubt for the Bucks tonight as he continues to struggle with a groin injury.
New signing Greg Mills is unlikely to be involved, with Sinton insisting that his match fitness must improve.
