AFC Telford offer terms to ex-West Brom Dwayne Samuels
Tuesday 19th July 2011, 3:17PM BST.
AFC Telford United boss Andy Sinton has offered terms to former West Brom full-back Dwayne Samuels – and is set to finalise a deal for defender Dan Preston.
Samuels, 20, who spent last season with relegated League Two side Grimsby, has been offered a one-year contract after impressing during a prolonged trial spell.
Former Birmingham City centre-back Preston, 19, has long been on Sinton’s radar and agreed terms in principle last month, but it has taken a few weeks to resolve a couple of minor issues.
Both players could be involved in tonight’s friendly with a Leicester City XI at the New Bucks Head (7.45pm).
“I’ve put something to Dwayne and I can’t see there being a problem,” said Sinton.
“Everything is sorted with Dan Preston and he should be getting his paperwork done tonight or tomorrow.
“The squad is coming along nicely – the phone is not ringing quite so much with agents and players any more.
“But there are always one or two that come out of the woodwork in the last couple of weeks and there are still a couple of areas that I’m looking at.”
Meanwhile, the Bucks will face a young Foxes side tonight – having arranged the game at short notice as a result of the postponement of the Shropshire Senior Cup final.
The senior Leicester squad are still away on a pre-season tour of manager Sven-Goran Eriksson’s native Sweden, but Sinton believes their youngsters will still provide a stern challenge.
“It will be a good test against a team of young, fit and hungry pros,” he said.
“It will also be a good one for Craig King (one of Sinton’s summer signings ) to play in if I involve him, as he would be up against the side who released him.”
Only the Sir Stephen Roberts Stand will be open for fans tonight.
Admission is £4 per person.
