Bucks benefit as conference players’ wages tumble
Monday 6th June 2011, 11:06AM BST.
Chairman Lee Carter believes AFC Telford United are benefitting from a downward turn in players’ wages as the club steps up preparations for its first season in the Conference Premier.
The Bucks are set to unveil two or three new faces this week, with a few more to come before the season starts on Saturday, August 13.
But Carter revealed that many of those would be costing less than the top earners in the club’s debut season back in 2004-05 – when they played three levels lower in the Northern Premier League division one.
“The budget has to go up but it’s being done with realistic assumptions on in-come,” said Carter, whose side won promotion through the Conference North play-offs last month.
“This is our eighth pre-season now and what I’m seeing is that the wage demands of players are becoming a lot more realistic.
“We are probably going to be signing a lot of players this summer for a lot less than we were six or seven years ago – and we are talking about players who have a good pedigree in the Conference.
“In the season just finished our highest paid player was probably on less than the highest paid player back in our first season in 2004.
“That’s indicative of the downward pressure on wages, and I can only see that increasing.”
