AFC Telford’s Andy Sinton not going to Cambridge United

Boss Andy Sinton has re-affirmed his commitment to AFC Telford United insisting a “romantic” return to first club Cambridge United is not on the cards.

Sinton, whose Telford side beat Stalybridge 1-0 on Saturday to extend their lead at the top of the Blue Square Bet North to three points, is believed to be on the wishlist at managerless Cambridge.

But the 45-year-old – who today confirmed he had added Stafford midfielder Levi Reid to the Bucks’ squad – is not interested in the vacancy at the full-timers, who have been without a permanent boss since Martin Ling was sacked at the end of January.

“There’s certainly been no official contact,” said former Spurs, Wolves and England winger Sinton.

“I can see where the link is – it’s where my career started, it’s where my wife’s family lives and it’s where I met her.

“There’s probably a little bit of romance in that story but I’ve said from day one that this place can satisfy my ambitions.

“Unless Newcastle United come in then I can’t see me going,” he added.

“Why would I leave here for a team that’s struggling just one league above? I’ve got a job to do here and I am loving it.”

Meanwhile, Sinton revealed that Reid had signed non-contract forms at the New Bucks Head after negotiating his release from managerless Stafford.

“Stafford have had a couple of problems and Levi wanted out, which is up to him,” said the Telford manager. “Now he’s out of Stafford we can sign him on a registration form and he’s not costing us a penny unless he plays.”

Given that Telford are currently 3 points clear at the top of the Blue Square North and Cambridge are just 5 points from the relegation zone in the Blue Square Premiership I personally think Mr Sinton is in perfect control of his faculties?

I for one am very glad that Andy Sinton is staying.

He is doing a fantastic job at AFC Telford, which shows as we are presently top of the Blue Square North as BJZ so rightly puts it.

We hopefully have a great chance of promotion this season, going back home to where we belong and I for one will be very happy for Sinton to join us up there – Up the Bucks!

Cambridge are a much bigger club than the Bucks and although they’re having a dip at the moment, they will always be one of the biggest clubs in non-league. The number of fans they get through the gate means that they’ll be competing at the top of that league again soon enough.

The cynic in me reads Sinton’s “there’s certainly been no official contact” as:

“Come and offer me something concrete and I’ll consider it”.
