Boss Andy Sinton bemoaned a setback in AFC Telford United’s promotion push, admitting: “We’re not ruthless enough.”

The Bucks conceded a late equaliser to draw 1-1 at home to Droylsden in the Blue Square Bet North last night, having missed a catalogue of decent chances.

Telford dropped to third as a result, Alfreton going above them to regain the initiative in the title race.

“We’ve put another point on the board against a team that I still think will be in the play-off shake-up,” said Sinton.

“But the game should have long been won by the time they scored. We should have been four or five up.

“It’s two points dropped through the fault of no one individual, but we need to be a bit more ruthless.

“We do enough work on it in training and it is up to the players on match days to take the chances that are afforded them. We probably had enough chances to win four games last night – but sometimes you don’t get what you deserve.”

Meanwhile, Sinton gave his backing to referee Sian Massey – whose appearance at the New Bucks Head last night generated interest following the recent sexism scandal sparked by comments made about her by ex-Sky presenters Richard Keys and Andy Gray.

Massey, an assistant referee at Premier League level, has had a couple of low key appointments at non-League level since the incident in January.

“I thought she did okay,” said Sinton. “I thought she missed a couple of things but sometimes you have to rely on your supposed assistants.

“I know there was a furore about females officiating, but I’ve absolutely no problems as long as they are up to the job.

“I certainly had no complaints with the referee we had last night.

“We’re in an age where there are equal opportunities and if a woman is good enough — and she was good enough — then why not?

“We’ve had a few male referees this season who have made horrendous mistakes so I think it’s nice to see.”
