AFC Telford’s Sinton criticises Lee Smith over loan deal

AFC Telford United boss Andy Sinton has hit out at winger Lee Smith after the Forest Green man back-tracked on a deal to extend his loan.

Smith had agreed in a principle to remain at the New Bucks Head for another two months after his initial one-month deal came to an end.

But he reversed his decision after being an unused substitute in Saturday’s 1-0 win at Boston, claiming the cost of travelling from his Gloucestershire base to Shropshire was the main reason.

“On Thursday he was jumping for joy that I had agreed to take him on loan for another two months,” said Sinton. “On Saturday he had the forms in his bag signed by Forest Green to give to the chairman.

“What has changed since Thursday? The only thing is that I decided not to use him on Saturday but I still think I got that decision right.

“I gave him a call on Monday and he was talking about the cost issue but Telford geographically has not moved in the last four weeks so that doesn’t wash with me.

“I don’t bear grudges but I just wish players would be totally honest with me and for him to be hiding behind cost issues like that was a bit disappointing.”

Smith’s absence could open the door for James Lawrie to return to the squad after missing the last two weeks with an ankle injury.

The 20-year-old Northern Ireland under 21 international hasn’t played for the Bucks since their victory over Workington at the start of the month. But the forward, who has scored four goals this term, is hoping to be fit for Saturday’s game against Harrogate.

The Bucks travel north without keeper Ryan Young, who begins a four-match suspension, with new Wolves loan man Aaron McCarey and Bucks youngster Daniel Platt battling for the number one jersey.
