Police hunting thugs who pelted AFC Telford United fans with missiles during ugly scenes after Monday’s match at Nuneaton today appealed for witnesses and victims to come forward.

Warwickshire Police said officers were studying footage filmed by the force’s helicopter during the disorder, which broke out at the end of the 0-0 draw between the two sides.

Visiting fans were hit by tyres and bottles, while two travelling coaches were also attacked. No-one was seriously injured.

A police spokesman confirmed six males aged between 15 and 40 were arrested. Five of those have since been granted police bail pending further inquiries. The sixth was released without charge and will face no further action.

Detective Sergeant Richard Brown, who is leading the investigation, appealed for anyone who took photographs or video of the incident to get in touch.

Both clubs condemned the violence with Telford chairman Lee Carter praising the action of county supporters.

He said: “Our fans didn’t retaliate to some pretty serious provocation. We want to make it very clear that it wasn’t our fans involved.”

A Nuneaton Town spokesman said: “The club has launched a full investigation and will collate information from its employees and the photographic evidence of the events and make all of it available to the police.”

The Blue Square Bet Conference will investigate the incident while the FA will wait for the referee’s report before deciding whether to take action.

Anyone with information is asked to call Nuneaton CID on 01926 415000 or the Crimestoppers service on 0800 555 111.
