Blog: Frustrating way to kick off Bucks’ new year

Monday 3rd January 2011, 3:20PM GMT.

Rob Hughes: To put it simply, Stafford did what Stafford do best: Two banks of four behind the ball to soak as much pressure up as possible by all means – fair or foul.

From No 1 to 11, Stafford’s players were hungrier and ended up coming away with the point they, on merit, deserved.

Two questionable decisions for me both from the bench: Firstly the decision to sacrifice our most effectively attacking outlet, Jonny Adams, a sight that is becoming all to regular an occurrence; secondly the delay in the Meechan for Brown change, barely allowing enough time for Alex to make an impact when we were crying out for someone to try and get between the two solid lines preventing us from working an opportunities.

If Greg Mills is serious about his Football League career, he should really be giving full-backs like Martin Naylor an absolute roasting, unfortunately too often he failed to do the simple things and looked like a young man who is being given too much conflicting advice from too many different people, which is taking some of his focus off his game.

The Derby manager wants him to see out the season here and Sinton would love him to stay, surely that is all he needs to know as he goes out in search of an extension to his contract with Derby.

Further to this is the concern that we failed to test a goalkeeper, whose handling looked incredibly suspicious. I struggle to recall him having to make any real saves, something of a concern with the firepower we have in our ranks this season.

At best we had maybe three penalty shouts that, on another day, could have presented us with an opportunity to pillage three valuable points, but on this occasion it wasn’t to be.

So, two points lost, against a side that already look as though they will struggle to limp over the finish line come the end of the season, meaning many Bucks fans would not be celebrating the new year in quite the way they would have been hoping to at 3pm on Saturday.

Here’s hoping there were some belated fireworks against Nuneaton today and hopefully three points which would set us up nicely for the rest of the season.

But to do that, we would have had to get out of second gear!
